I learned this from a professional photographer and instructor, Jimmy Domingo.
One way of avoiding overexposed photos caused by flash is . . . with a tissue! Yes, you read it right, tissue. Apparently tissue helps soften the flash glare. Try it.
Simply cover the flash area with a tissue or a white cloth and, voila, you get a better exposed photo. Here's a sample.
